Dr. Richard Thornton took the reigns as executive director of the Brantley County Development Authority in mid 2011 upon retiring from Southeastern Technical College in Swainsboro, bringing with him a wealth of experience in economic development in South Georgia.

At Southeastern Technical College, where he was vice president for academic affairs and executive director of economic development, Dr. Thornton worked closely with chambers of commerce, development authorities, and local business and industry to attract new industry and support existing industry. As the college's executive director for economic development, Dr. Thornton managed customized training, continuing education, and Work Ready assessment and training for Emanuel, Jenkins, Johnson, and Treutlen counties.

Rail Service
: CSX Transportation
The Rice Yard, the highest production rail classification yard in North America, is located in Waycross, 20 miles west of Nahunta, 10 miles west of Schlatterville.

Deep Water Ports
: located in Brunswick, Georgia (approximately 25 miles east of Nahunta) and Jacksonville, FL (approximately 70 miles.)

Air Service
: Public General Aviation is available via a 3,000 ft landing strip located in Lulaton (Brantley County), currently under construction to extend to 4,000 ft. The Jacksonville International Airport is approximately 65 miles south of Brantley County and air service is also available in Brunswick, 36 miles east of Nahunta. The Glynco Jetport (Brunswick) has an 8,001 ft runway with commercial service available from ASA and Delta. The Waycross/Ware County Airport three runways: 5,035 ft, 3,528 ft and 5,230 ft. The Jesup/Wayne County Airport has a 4,916 ft runway.
